Welcome . . . come on in!
Who is behind Smart-Start-Kayaking.com and Why?
Just me ... my kayak, paddle and lots of coffee. Welcome to my corner of the internet.
I wanted to share information and tips with folks who want to start paddling! Folks who want to get started but need a little help figuring things out. Or perhaps you just need a little boost of confidence.
So what do I know about kayaking?
Well, I've been fortunate to live on the Atlantic coast of the United States because I love the water. I sailed for many years - first a 34 foot sailing sloop and then a 23 foot Sea Sprite daysailer - both beautiful boats.
I fell in love with kayaking when I moved to a house on a lake in 1999. Sailing and kayaking have something really nice in common . . . quiet enjoyment.
To untie a line and paddle off to tranquility is a wonderful thing. Even a short paddle can recharge your batteries.
I've put together what I believe are the basics about kayaking and paddling to give you a good start. In addition to this information, I highly recommend a basic kayaking class. You can find one right here.
I'm often asked why and how I started this site so I wrote a page about that too, you can find out here.
I truly hope you find this site helpful. Smart-Start-Kayaking.com just passed it's fourth birthday - it's visitors are growing globally - thank you!
So where is this site headed?
Well ... I hope you will tell me! Your feed back helps me focus on topics that will benefit other beginners.
A lot of folks were looking for kayaks and paddling gear. So, the Paddling Shop is open (24 hours)! Have a look.
A few readers thought videos would help them to understand some techniques better so I recently posted relevant videos. There are a couple on paddling techniques, self rescue and some that demonstrate a few types of kayaks. I hope you find them helpful.
When you're finished paddling around the site (no hurry please) . . . go to the Feed Back page and let me know your thoughts. (It's completely anonymous - no personal information) and it only takes a minute.
Thanks so much, I know you'll love kayaking as much as I do.Happy paddling!
